Melbourne on CD, Sydney on CD, Central Coast on CD These Frequently Asked Questions address some common problems that may be encountered.
1. Part or all of the screen display is black when a map is called up.The user can see the left or upper side of the map, but the right side appears black. You need to ensure that your display settings are correct. Click the right mouse button on an empty spot on your desktop, then click the left button on "Properties", usually at the bottom of the list. Select the "Settings" tab on the right hand end. Make sure that "High Colour (16 bit)" or "True Colour (32 bit)" is selected; "16 colours" or "256 colours" won’t work. In fact, the maps only use 256 colours, but we need to allow for the simultaneous display of images with different colour palettes. 2. Find Metropolitan Address by Postcode does not work. For Melbourne on CD only
and not applicable to Versions 4.5 or above. The streets by postcode selection is wrong for postcodes above 3785. Somewhere between beta testing and cutting the production disks, we broke the index file for postcodes in Melbourne on CD. Our Downloads page contains a file which can be downloaded, unzipped and run to correct the problem Sorry about that, Chief! 3. Using any find method causes the program to crash. Not applicable to
Versions 4.5 or above. For earlier versions it is particular to some builds of Windows 2000/XP/NT. Any of the Find commands that use the Find Table dialogue box result in an application error. Our Downloads page contains a file which can be downloaded, unzipped and run to correct the problem Not quite sure what happened here; everyone is a bit red-faced and tight lipped; they mutter something about "memory management problems". 4. I cannot find a map, it's in the book but I cannot find it on the CD.It is possible to miss a page so let us know if you cannot find a page. For versions earlier than 4.5, you might look in More Maps. 5. The CD fails to load on to my computer. If you are running Norton Anti Virus V5.0, then disable it and the CD will load. (Remember to re-enable NAV after loading) 6. The Victorian maps seem to scroll only two pages at a time - how do I measure distance over four pages?OOPs another mistake to be corrected in the next release. But here is how you do it. Suppose you start somewhere to the right and want to go left. Let the map scroll as you measure distance as far as it will go. When the map will not scroll any further, click the left button to mark that point. Then click the right button to release the distance trace. Now you can move the mouse pointer to click on the left arrow on the tool bar. When the new map opens, use the scroll bar to move the map back to where you finished the trace. Click with the left button and pick up the trace from where you left off. 7. The maps print beautifully but image export gives a poor quality image.Set the zoom level to 100% before exporting the selected area. The window zoom level affects the resolution of the exported map image. At 100% screen zoom, the map will be exported at the resolution of the stored Discway map - roughly equivalent to a physical map page being scanned at 200 dpi (dpi = "dots per inch"). When zoomed in the exported image will have a higher resolution - up to 350 dpi equivalent when fully zoomed in (this is performed by interpolation - there is no "real" improvement in quality). When the display window is zoomed out from the 100% zoom level, the exported image will have a lower resolution - there will be a loss of image quality for the benefit of a smaller image file. Fully zoomed out, the exported image would be equivalent to a 50 dpi scan. Exporting images when displaying at the 100% zoom level should be satisfactory for most purposes, but try the other zoom levels and resolutions if you have particular needs. 8. Re-install fails, tells me to uninstall, then uninstall fails. You need to use regedit to remove all the registry entries in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Discway Maps\, then the re-install should work. Sometimes un-installing leaves some entries behind in the Windows registry, but removes everything else. The installation program sees these entries and advises you to un-install first. The un-install process can't find the information it needs because it's gone, so you end up in a frustrating endless loop ("see Loop, endless", Loop endless says, "see Endless loop). This situation can also arise when an initial installation fails to complete. If all this sounds a bit too scary for you, then call us and we can talk you through it. 9. The map does not print the way I want it to.We usually get this question when a user has displayed the area of interest on the screen and printed it using the toolbar "print" button or the File menu .. Print command. All of the original map page containing the area on the screen is printed out. Click on the the "Arrow" button on the toolbar, THEN select the area you want to print. If you just want what's on the screen, select from top left to bottom right. If you want more, keep scrolling. Use the Print Preview command in the file menu to check what will be printed. Don't forget that you can add a title and switch between portrait and landscape page layout. Needing to read this FAQ in order to get the printing to work is an offence for which the penalty is reading all our lovely on-line help three times. 10. How can I display two maps at once?Open the first map by any of the means available, e.g. Find | Melway Reference | 19 | OK. Open the second map, e.g. Find | Metropolitan Address | Bell | st Preston | OK. The second map completely covers the first. To see them both, use the Windows menu command "Tile". You can then click and drag the borders around to re-size the map windows and shift the windows around. Penalty for asking this question - read right through the help twice. 11. Error Message: `Unable to load the resource DLL!' when the program is invoked. If you receive this message you probably should have the multiuser version or network version of the CD, but you may be able to sort out the problem by taking note of the following. In a normal installation, the program and its supporting files are placed in the “C:\Program Files\DiscwayN.N” folder ("N.N" being the Version number), in a networked environment, this folder could be anywhere. Obviously, for the program to run at all, the user must have been granted access to this installation folder. All three directory versions of the program use the same executable. It is called with a command line tag to indicate which of the directories is to be used. The DLLs and indexing files required for each street directory reside in the sub-folders under the program folder. If the user has not been granted access to these sub-folders, then the error message above will be reported when the program is invoked. Most administrators will get this part right, but there can be another cause for the problem. In order for the program to determine the correct paths for the directory-specific files, it accesses Windows Registry keys under the branch: My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Discway Maps Some systems are set up with what are known as “roaming logins”, enabling a user to log in to any workstation on the network. In some implementations of this, the network login script sources some or all of the Windows Registry entries for each user from a server. In this case, the required registry entries installed under the Administrator’s identity are not available to the Discway Maps user and the same error message will be reported. The solution is to patch the entire Discway Maps branch into the user’s source copy of the registry on the server. |
